Gambler Counselor Certification

The Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling KYCPG) encourages behavioral health professionals, licensed clinical social workers, doctors and nurses, clergy and lay ministers, and employee assistance professionals to learn more about gambling addiction and treatment protocols. KYCPG seeks to increase the number of International Certified Gambling Counselors (ICGC) serving Kentucky. As of October 2021, there are six active ICGCs, three in semi-retired status, and one retired counselor.

In 2012, KYCPG conducted an analysis of Oregonʼs publicly funded problem and addicted gambling treatment program, which indicated, based on Kentuckyʼs population, there should be between 14 and 24 certified gambler counselors across the Commonwealth. The analysis results were compared with other states that operate publicly funded problem and addicted gambler treatment programs, and that supported the analysis recommendation.

Kentucky is underserved not only in the number of active certified gambler counselors but also in geographic coverage. The current certified gambler counselors are concentrated in Louisville and Owensboro, with one in London and one semi-retired certified gambler counselor in Murray.

KYCPG works to present annually classroom training that provides education approved by the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board. In cooperation with the Indiana Council on Problem Gambling, over the course of 18 months those seeking ICGC-I certified status can obtain the necessary classroom hours.

Please go to www.igccb.org for full details of the ICGC certification levels, which include:

★ ICGC-I,

★ ICGC-II,

★ BACC, for those approved to provide clinical supervision,

★ ICOGS (co-occurring gambling specialist) for those working in substance abuse and mental health disorders with clients who have co-occurring disorders, and

★ Clergy/Lay Minister gambler counseling certification
